Hermanus is riding a global wave of eco-collaboration this year as Réunion Island steps in as Guest of Honour at the Hermanus Whale Festival 2025 (3–5 October). This island-to-island partnership celebrates a shared love for the ocean — and a united commitment to protecting marine life, from majestic southern right whales and playful dolphins to vulnerable sea turtles and coral ecosystems.
A Festival with Purpose
Now celebrating its 34th year, the Hermanus Whale Festival isn’t just South Africa’s biggest whale-watching event — it’s the only eco-marine festival of its kind in the world. The beating heart of the festival, the Eco-Marine Village, transforms the waterfront into a living classroom, where scientists, conservation groups, and eco-warriors come together to educate and inspire.

Expect to meet passionate teams from:
- Dyer Island Conservation Trust
- Cape Nature
- Marine Dynamics
- SANPARKS
- and many more
These and other local marine partners will unpack everything from whale ecology and estuary health to ocean pollution and responsible tourism — all designed to spark awareness and action.
Nature Meets Art at the Hisense Cinema
When you’re ready for a breather, slip into the Hisense Nature Cinema — a calm retreat featuring short films from Triggerfish Animation Studios, South Africa’s internationally acclaimed animation house. It’s a beautiful blend of storytelling, artistry, and environmental awareness.
Shared Seas, Shared Responsibility
As Hermanus prepares for another unforgettable weekend, its purpose is crystal clear: marine conservation isn’t the backdrop — it’s the soul of the festival.
With Réunion Island’s leadership and the dedication of countless eco-partners, the 2025 Hermanus Whale Festival isn’t just a celebration — it’s a movement. A call for ocean lovers everywhere to protect, preserve, and pass on our marine heritage for generations to come.
