Clean & Green: Our Promise to the Ocean

The Hermanus Whale Festival is more than a celebration of whales — it is a commitment to protecting the ocean they call home.

Each year, the Festival partners with conservation organisations, eco-conscious businesses and local communities to reduce waste, protect marine wildlife and create greater environmental awareness.

USE LESS | WASTE LESS | PROTECT MORE

WHY IT MATTERS

Balloons

Brightly coloured balloon fragments are often mistaken for food by whales, dolphins, turtles, seals and seabirds — leading to choking, injury and death.

Plastic Straws

Used for only minutes, but polluting our oceans for centuries.

Plastic Ties, Ribbons & String

These items can entangle marine wildlife and cause severe injury or fatal obstruction.

ACTION AT THE FESTIVAL

NO BALLOONS

In partnership with stallholders, sponsors and local businesses, the Festival discourages the sale, use and release of balloons during the Festival period.

STRAW-FREE INITIATIVE

Restaurants, takeaways and vendors are encouraged not to automatically provide plastic straws unless specifically requested.

ECO-MARINE EDUCATION

Interactive environmental displays, talks and activities help educate the next generation about protecting our oceans and marine wildlife.

YOUR ROLE

Protecting the ocean starts with small choices.

By reducing single-use plastics and supporting responsible tourism, we help protect whales, dolphins and the marine ecosystems that make Hermanus so special.

Together we can keep our coastline clean, wild and thriving for future generations.
